Norfolk is a waterfront city in southeastern Virginia.

The Chrysler Museum of Art is located in the Ghent district which is the most artistic area of the city. This museum is known for being one of the most important museums in all of the southeastern U.S. It dates back to the 1930s and the art collection is based on the art collected by Walter Chrysler, of Chrysler car fame. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, glasswork, photography and decorative arts.

This free museum has one of the country’s leading glass collections. It also features European and American painting and sculpture, modern art, contemporary art and even ancient art.

Next door you’ll find the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio where artists work on their creations and visitors can see demonstrations in glass blowing. There are also classes and workshops available.

The USS Wisconsin is a famous mighty battleship that was on duty during WW II and the Korean War. It was retired in the 1980s and then put into service again in the Operation Desert Storm in the 1990s.

Today this ship is a nautical museum and visitors can take self-guided tours through the vessel. If you prefer you can take a guided tour during which the history of the vessel will be explained to you.

The Moses Myers House is the former home of Moses Myers, a famous American entrepreneur. He is known for being part of the growth of Norfolk. Visitors to the house can see how people lived in the US at the turn of the century. This was one of the first brick buildings to be built in the city. Most of the original furnishings are still here and a permanent exhibition tells the story and history of Moses Myers.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden has been\ divided into different sections that include more than forty gardens. Each has a specific theme and altogether there are 52 themed gardens. On summer days children can enjoy the splash pad.

Since the flowers and plants are all seasonal the gardens can bloom all year long. A special garden has been dedicated to younger visitors. Among the gardens are the Japanese Garden with ponds and the Hummingbird Garden with plants favored by hummingbirds. Not all of the flora and fauna are from the U.S. there is also a Tropical Display Garden with a rainforest environment.

The garden is surrounded by water on three sides, with canals running through it. Boat tours and tram tours are available. There are special scheduled events like the annual Dominion Garden of Lights from late November through the New Year.

The Hunter House Victorian Museum dates from 1894. It was the former home of the Hunter family and visitors can get a look at how Victorian families lived in Norfolk. The house is on the list of National Register of Historic Places. You can see period furnishings and antique memorabilia.

The Virginia Zoo has more than 500 animals making their home here. You can see elephants, lions, tigers, giraffes, rhinos, orangutans, kangaroos and other wildlife.

The animals can be seen from elevated boardwalks. The zoo is also known for its gardens. You can visit at night to see the nocturnal animals. Visitors can relax at the cafeteria.

The Nauticus National Maritime Center was founded in the 1980s and opened its doors in 1994. It is dedicated to everything nautical with interactive exhibits and large screen theaters.

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is part of the center and gives visitors a close up look at exhibits like the shark lab and a horseshoe crab touch tank.

You can also see a marina and a cruise ship.

Naval Station Norfolk is known as the largest station in the world. The base stretches for more than six kilometers along the waterfront. There are 134 aircraft her and 74 naval vessels.

It is a working naval base and home to the largest number of navy personnel in the U.S. Visitor can tour the base with a member of the naval staff and have the history and work of the navy explained. You can also tour some of the ships and aircraft.

General Douglas MacArthur Memorial is dedicated to Douglas MacArthur, a U.S. general and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. The memorial also honors Americans who served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Occupation of Japan and the Korean War.

The memorial is housed in an old courthouse and the complex consists of the memorial building and a large visitors center. Visitors enter through the center that has a gift shop and several displays among them MacArthur’s staff car and then walk through a courtyard into the courthouse building.

The building contains the tombs of the General and Mrs. MacArthur, right in the center below the huge dome. There are galleries on the main and upper level that chronicle MacArthur’s life and events of the time period.

Wells Theatre 2-17-05

Wells Theater first opened its doors in 1913. Many well-known U.S. performers have performed here and a large movie screen was set up in 1916. As time went on the theater was a gin house and brothel and finally listed on the Register of Historic Places.

The Hermitage Museum and Gardens offers a look at the days of old in Norfolk and is a home and art museum.

The Sloane House sits on the banks of the scenic Lafayette River and dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. In the house are more than 40,000-period objects. The gardens stretch for 12 acres and include lush forests and wetlands.

The Sailing Harbor Cruises let you see Norfolk from the water. The ship the American Rover can carry more than 100 passengers at a time. The iconic red sails made from red tanbark can be seen from afar. There are sunset cruises available as well.
