Beautiful Chesapeake

Chesapeake is the third most populous city in the state of Virginia.

The Chesapeake Arboretum is the place to go so you can learn all about the flora and fauna in this area. It dates back to the 18th century at which time the farmhouse was built. There are lovely themed gardens here. Among them, you’ll find a fragrance garden and an antique rose garden. There is also a hardwood forest to explore. This is a stop on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail South Chesapeake Loop.

In the southeastern part of the city on the banks of the Northwest River, you’ll find the Northwest River Park. This is a wonderful place to see the local flora and fauna. There are trails to walk all over the park. You can relax at the picnic areas and children enjoy the playgrounds. If you enjoy mini golf head for the “Dude Ranch” mini-golf course. This is also a stop on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail so you can do some bird watching.

ches Battlefield-Park

Battlefield Park is a monument that was created to commemorate the history of the Battle of Great Bridge. You’ll find an Interpretive Historic Pathway, a recreation of the Causeway of 1775 and an outdoor auditorium. At the entrance to the park is a monument set up by the Daughters of the American Revolution in the memory of the Patriot soldiers who died here. To learn more you can take a docent tour that is free of charge.

Families will enjoy the Fun Forest at the City Park. There is a play area for children, an imagination center, and a family adventure area. 2,000 volunteers helped build this and the playgrounds were designed to develop motor skills, coordination, and interactive play. Some of the activities offered here are an underground telephone, a shaking bridge, a dolphin side and swings, and slides. There is also a Fossil Dig for the curious with a sand pit that is full of fossils.

Hickory Ridge Farm is family owned and offers delicious seasonal produce. There are many fruits and vegetables. To see the farm animals up close there is a petting zoo. Among the seasonal activities are pumpkin picking in the autumn and strawberry picking in the spring.

On City Park Drive you’ll find a memorial to those who perished during 9/11 the Chesapeake 9/11 Memorial. It was set up in memory of the tragedy in New York and is made up of a steel beam taken from the World Trade Center.

There is also a rock from Shanksville and a piece of limestone from the Pentagon.

At the strategic location, the intersection of the Chesapeake Canal and the Elizabeth River is the Great Bridge Lock Park. The lock was created to keep the salt water and the fresh water of the two waterways separate. This park is now a part of a peninsula that is flanked by the canal and the river on each side. Here you’ll find boat ramps, picnic spots and trails to explore. Popular activities here are fishing and crabbing or you can choose to explore the woods in the western section.

If you want to see the true beauty of the Atlantic Ocean then you must go to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The tunnel connects the Eastern Shore and Virginia Beach. It offers some of the loveliest views in the city.

Chesapeake Park is also known as City Park and offers visitors grassy open space, leafy woodland and trees. The park is known for its outdoor events like the Chesapeake Park Whisper Concert Series and the Chesapeake Jubilee. The park also has a skate park, horseshoe pits, and a dog park.

Rodgers’ Puddings are for pudding lovers. You can visit and try some of the famous desserts. The pudding shop is in the historic district and has won awards for its banana pudding.

Dismal Swamp Canal

The Great Dismal Swamp is located outside of Chesapeake in southeastern Virginia and stretches as far as northeastern North Carolina. The area is a place of legend and mysteriously foggy. It was known as a refuge during the time of slavery when African Americans used the swamp as a means of escape. Today it is known for its natural beauty and is a designated National Wildlife Refuge.

Lake Drummond is one of two lakes in Virginia and is located in the middle of Dismal Swamp. Legends abound about the lake and the swamp. Fishermen have spotted a ghostly white canoe paddling in the lake with a fire-fly lamp. People come here for fishing and boating.

Gum Tree Farm is the local producer of sheep but you can also see ducks, turkeys, pigs, cows, horses, goats and a donkey named Studebaker here. Visitors can interact with the animals. There is also a fiber producing business making fiber from fiber plants. You can take a tour which explains the history and activities like dyeing wool and includes live demonstrations.
